Dear Station Members,
Attached is a recent newspaper cutting in China, showing the tree workers loosening up the grips on a Veteran Tree during their regular inspection.
It is so described in the remarks on the photo that the tree was supported by metal railing & grips to avoid toppling & breakage by wind & snow. The loosening of the grips “is for preventing any chafing of the tree parts in view of the continuous growth of the Veteran Tree”, so that structural damage is not to be anticipated.
China is a place which can be advanced in many sectors of science & technology, but apparently not matching the world when it comes to tree care. In the many seminars & visits of CAA there in the past, we have a general feeling that tree care is not regarded as a necessity, & if any problem occurs, the tree is simply removed. Given a country so vast to spread the population unlike some crowded city in Asia, China has been practicing their own principles in Arboriculture with their own experts, many of whom do not understand English to join the world.
CAA has translated & published quite a number of articles on Arboriculture within China, & most were well received. However when it comes to the administrative level, hardly any international idea would be accepted, & the industry just carries on the same old way. The administrators would view any change as a menace, & updated knowledge & practices are extra burden.
Currently China is undergoing administrative storm in combating corruption. This is a time to make it even harder to try to bring in any outside ideas to the administration, as no one knows how long the same official would stay in a particular post. China may need to wait for a little while, unless the top administration has suddenly decided to call up a rapid change in tree care.
Patience is the key to work along with this Land of the Old Dragons, & who would know it better than CAA?
best regards,
Sammy Au
